Here we go again,,,Razz

Pizza should only have sauce, spices, and cheese on it, maybe a little pepperoni from time to time.

Putting anything else on it should be a crime Mad . Hiding the pure perfection of a well made pizza is flat out crazy.

Wait, Jenni is from the land of no oxygen so there obviously is no good pizza there. Sounds to me like you need to mask the cruddy pizza Wink .

What does this mean?

And what does a low level of oxygen have to do with pizza?!?!?! :P

Mmmmmmmm.
First, it is thick crust (but not pan style) with double sauce and double cheeese. It is topped with onion, ham, pineapple, mushrooms and black olives. MmMmmMMMmmmm. Yeah baby !

And of course it is accompanied by Coke Classic... the only pizza-worthy soft drink.

Any pie made in New Haven--preferably thin, burnt crust, maybe a little garlic--to die for!

Cool

Koz has had his little rant about 'real' pizza before. Just roll your eyes and agree lol

I pretty much like any pizza, made any way, anywhere...etc.

But it really needs to be washed down with a diet coke

This is indeed true Jenni I do "rant" about pure pizza from time to time. Being a self proclaimed expert pizza connoisseur I feel I am more than qualified. Big Grin

Putting vegetables and fruit on a pizza is just wrong. If you want that stuff eat a salad Razz .

In regards to the oxygen comment, the consistency of the dough, cheese, and taste that really makes a "great" pizza all derives from the water used. That high altitude water might be good for beer but it does no justice to pizza Razz .

What can I say I have "issues" about pizza Roll Eyes .

BobLaz: Do you have a favorite of the New Haven pizzas? Mine is Bar pizza, thinnest crust, good tangy sauce, mozzarella, bacon done crisp. They also have something called mashed potato pie, with bacon and garlic, minus the tomato sauce. Talk about indulgence! And the beer that goes best with it: their own microbrew Toasted Blonde and a salad with their own dressing of vinagrette, walnuts, pears and bleu cheese. Also of note is their Stout: thick, creamy, coffee and chocolate overtones, something to sink your teeth into. It's great as a dessert.

Pepe's has opened a new branch in Fairfield this week. I don't think their pizza is as great as the hype indicates. Never been to Sally's, but Modern uses brick ovens and it adds to the flavor. There is one place in East Haven that uses cornmeal on the bottom.

I hate to disagree, but nothing comes close to Pepe's--and I've spent TONS of time (and money!) at all of them. Sally's is VERY good--as is Modern--and BAR is very tasty, too. But when it comes to pizza WORLDWIDE, Wooster St. has it covered..Tolli's in East Haven was good, too--but I haven't been there in at least 6-7 years..It's hard to talk REAL pizza with people who've never been to the New Haven area..it's simply a religious experience.. Big Grin

Lots of cheese and pepperoni, not to mention black olives and mushrooms. Crust is negotiable; any way is as good as any other.

Koz ha raggione. Koz is right. Many Americans are disappointed if not flat out surprised when they go to Italy and find what they consider "bare-bones" pizza. Truth is, all the toppings craze is strictly an American invention.

Don't bother with Tolli's any more. I went there a couple of months ago, it tasted like frozen pizza.

I want to go to Italy soon. What is the best time of year to go? I'd like to go next year, when I save up some vacation time. I'd like to stay for two weeks. I want to do back roads, and I need to spend time learning the language, I already have tapes and CDs.

Naturally, I need to take V with us, she wants to go to Venice, and it will be a great learning experience for her. I want to see some touristy things, but I really want to see the hills of Tuscany, the islands, experience the cooking of the southern east coast, the ruins of old Rome, Pompeii, Florence-the seat of the Renaissance, lots of stuff I've read about.

The best time of the year to go would probably conflict with Little V's school year: either spring (April-May) or early fall (Sept-Oct). It gets bloody hot in Italy in the summer, also scads of tourists. Let me know if you want info about lodging and the like.

I would likely go during April break next year. I'll let V stay out of school for an extra week, the learning experience will be worth her while. Any info you can give me would be great.

If you want to see the out of the way places you'll probably need to rent a car, which means one of you will need to get an international licence. They can be had for $15 at at AAA. Rental cars are very expensive in Europe so you may want to go through an agency in the US; AAA or some other.

As for lodgings, your best bet is bed and breakfasts. If you permit me, I can send you a link via e-mail. They are much cheaper than hotels.

Sad news about Tolli's--used to truly be high-quality, but nothing lasts forever, I guess..

Hope you have fun when you go; buon viaggio!

I like Pepperoni and Pineapple on mine... it's very tasty!

But as long as we make mention of good quality pizza places, I think the best pizza place to sit & eat in around here is Valentino's.
