Everyone knows that Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. Most people, however, cannot remember who the last man on the moon was - it was Gene Cernan. On December 11, 1972, It appears that almost all recollection of Cernan has been erased from the collective American memory. For instance, most Americans can remember the infamous "One Small Step ..." comment that Neil Armstrong made when he stepped onto the moon, but who can remember what Cernan said as man left the moon for the last time:

"...as we leave the Moon at Taurus Littrow, we leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind. Godspeed the crew of Apollo 17."

So '73 is a good guess Big Grin

Still on Space how about what year Sputnik 1 was launched?

I believe it was 57, and it was a good thing for the U.S. space program as far as getting funding to compete in the space race.

What was the first year Vietnam was at war. I'm not referring to France or the U.S.

I'm pretty sure it was 1957. There was mention of it having been 50 years on a local radio station here last year.

Year the first Ford Mustang is manufactured.

Spot on Fuse

quote:
July 6, 1957

One of John Lennon's friends, Ivan Vaughan, introduces Paul McCartney, age 15, to John at a Quarry Men performance at the Woolton garden fete held at St Peter's Church. Soon after, John invites him to join the group. A tape, which research by Jim O'Donnell (author of "The Day John Met Paul") has confirmed is from this day, has surfaced and is now owned by EMI. The tape has performances of "Puttin' On the Style" and a cover of Elvis Presley's "Baby, Let's Play House" with vocals by John.

Oh so close! The first Mustang rolled off the assembly line on March 9, 1964. And the MK1 Capri is a fine looking automobile!

I'm guessing 1999 for Google.

quote:
In September 1998, Google Inc. opened its door in Menlo Park, California. The door came with a remote control, as it was attached to the garage of a friend who sublet space to the new corporation's staff of three. The office offered several big advantages, including a washer and dryer and a hot tub. It also provided a parking space for the first employee hired by the new company: Craig Silverstein, now Google's director of technology.

Already Google.com, still in beta, was answering 10,000 search queries each day. The press began to take notice of the upstart website with the relevant search results, and articles extolling Google appeared in USA TODAY and Le Monde. That December, PC Magazine named Google one of its Top 100 Web Sites and Search Engines for 1998
