I posted this in "On this date" but thought it might deserve some discussion....
February 3,1959

Rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff on a flight from Mason City to Moorehead, Minnesota.....More here

That happened a year before I was born, but the influence they had on music lives on. Plus one of the greatest tribute songs came from that tragedy, American Pie by Don McLean.
