anyhoo, i have a question ive been wondering about for a long time. and no, im not downloading music, im a good girl ^^ is it illegal to download music you already own the CD for? say your cd drive on the pc is broken, and you want to get a song onto your ipod or whatever, from a cd you paid for, can you do that? along the same line, what about music videos that people have taken a song, and clips from movies or animes, and made a video from that? whats the legal standing on things like that? |

Why is it since the days of Jeeves we consider this topic verboten, it doesn't get addressed...? It goes unspoken.
As far as I know its not illegal everywhere. Must we not speak about it? |

I didn't reply because I don't consider myself knowledgeable about this subject. But you're right; if I recall correctly, I think an AP computer enthusiast was banned or voluntarily left after being "disciplined" by the owners for answering this type of question. If lynda doesn't get an answer here, I suggest she ask the question in Internet Infidels' Media and Popular Culture forum... there are several very savvy "techno" people there who most likely could explain downloading legalities.

Lynda,
Technically, if you want to download something you already own then you must buy another copy. There are sites which charge a small fee to download songs. Most videos can be downloaded for free. Bands usually allow these to be downloaded on various sites. This encourages you to buy their CD. If this doesn't answer your question, I suggest you ask your question at www.answerpool.com This message has been edited. First of all, Lynda was aware of AP's existence and obviously chose NOT to ask her question there!
Secondly, since she lives in Canada (?), it may be legal for her to download music! This page states: "In Canada, for example, downloading copyright music from peer-to-peer networks is legal, but uploading those files is not. Additionally Canada has imposed fees on recording mediums like blank CDs and similar items. These levies are used to fund musicians and songwriters for revenues lost due to consumer copying. Canada has initially charged this tax on MP3 players, but a recent Supreme Court decision ruled that the law was written in such a way that these players were exempt from the tax." |

I suppose you posted another question and answerboard site to slam AP again. Or_Or_Or maybe you just get a kick out of it all.

Thanks for addressing what I asked peeps.
I know the original question was dated but I was just curious why people left that one alone and have always seemed to. |
