Yesterday just before 4PM I had just logged off and I moved into the adjoining bedroom to watch a few programmes on the TV
when My sister shouted up...Michael .Look outside! And I Got a real shock there was nothing but Grey Not a fog! It was the Thickest
and Most Greyish cloud of something I call "zero visability" anything below 10 yards but this was in your face zero Eek I opened the Window and whatever it was was very acrid
I was coughing for 10 minutes afterwards
Then thankfully It rained a Heavy shower and a big gust of wind cleared the View.
and About 200 yards away there was Thick black smoke rising from the Derelict Chicken Factory across the Road
What had happen somebody had set light to rubbish at the Back and it had spread to somewhere were chemicals where stored (could hear aerosols exploding from our house)
As I said if it hadn't been for the rain shower
acting as an extra firefighter the Damage would have been much greater, and the fumes would have got in the Houses nearby (about 50 yards away)

It took the Fire brigade only just over half an hour to extinguish the Fire
2 side stories
1) Despite all the Chemical smell as soon as the cloud cleared there were dozens of People running down the street to have a Look...Silly Eek
There was a smaller secondary cloud afterwards when the First Fire fighters got on the scene. The station is 3 minutes away (2 appliances)
I shouted out to the Neighbours and they got indoors sharp But by now the breeze had whipped up to move the smoke along the Line of the Motorway (Interstate) which runs along the back of the Unit
Which brings me to the second part which is a Question if you are travelling at up to 80mph (On the Slab)and This grey mist bank envelopes you do you slow down/stop, and put your headlamps/Hazard flashers on for all the good it'll do and risk shunting a vehicle up the Back end or what? They don't tell you that in driving lessons! Roll Eyes
I'll bet that scared some people rigid Eek

And It wasn't reported in the Press! Nor on the teletext service which is pretty prompt at breaking news .Was there something they told the press Not to say?! Mad

Good to know it didn't harm you and your family. Smile

Some time ago when I was driving to work early in the morning, I saw what I thought to be thick fog. I realized it was smoke though when just before I was to get off the highway, the car in front of me 'disappeared.' I promptly slowed my car down. My lights were already on, so I was okay there.

"...Derelict Chicken Factory..."

Do they make derelict chickens or do they process derelict chickens? If the chickens are derelict before they get to the factory, in what manner are they derelict? Heavy drinking? Drug use? Just plain n'eer-do-well fowl? Are the derelict chickens sold at the same price as regular chickens, or do you get a discount? Confused

Derelict chickens are ½ price, they are tough skinned you know. Razz

Mike, I don’t think it was casually brushed aside. It sounds like an old processing factory caught fire and burned is all. Thick smoke for about 10 minutes and by the fire department got on scene it was already dying down. Within 30 minutes it was pretty much under control and the worst was apparently over.

What would be “brushed aside”? If there were serious injury or deaths and they reported it like that I probably would agree, but to me it seems like a fairly routine fire that the fire department had extinguished in a short time. Most factories or processing plants store chemicals that can and do explode it a fire.

There are people who love form filling and Tale tellers, Like the Local council
on the other hand the Police and the Fire service skirt around many situations if they can get away with it to avoid the form filling
pass it off as "routine" or trivial Frown
The council also put off scheduled repairs unless there is an Incident (which is reported in the Press) They then make a token show for a few days "To show they are 'busy'" Then they make an excuse to stop ("We've Ran out of funding") and then they go back into their shell Frown

Should have added some BBQ sauce to those chickens. Pretty quick to be out in 1/2 hour. Glad you're ok.
